Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an advanced form of life support targeted at the heart and lungs. It may be indicated in cases of acute severe cardiac or respiratory failure that is potentially reversible and unresponsive to conventional management ECMO may also be used to support people with heart or lung disease that cannot be cured while they wait for an organ transplant (e.g. new heart and/or lungs). There are two main types of ECMO, venovenous (V-V) and venoarterial (V-A). V-A ECMO provides haemodynamic support while also providing oxygenation and V-V ECMO provides respiratory support.
In 2024, a total of 73 patients received ECMO as part of their ICU treatment. Approximately 1/2 of these patients received VV-ECMO, with the other 1/2 receiving VA-ECMO.
ECMO Retrieval
The NSW state ECMO retrieval services is coordinated by NSW Ambulance, RPA and St Vincent’s Hospital. In 2024, there were 25 ECMO retrievals done out of the RPA ICS.
